What’s the difference between strength and mobility?

Before looking at how mobility can impact your strength, we thought it was first important to understand the difference between the two. In the simplest terms, strength relates to how much force your joints and muscles are able to produce, maintain, and receive. Mobility, on the other hand, relates to how your joints and muscles move when being used.

Both strength and mobility play a very important role in not only your fitness but also your day-to-day life. For example, if you have issues with your mobility, your body is not going to be operating how it is designed to, and you will be placing more force on certain muscles and joints.

The importance of mobility training

When it comes to training in the gym, many people overlook the importance of mobility training. While strength training can be great at building your muscles, mobility exercises actually help to lengthen and shorten your muscles, allowing them to generate more force and higher strength. Mobility training is also able to provide you with a wide range of benefits:

  1. More effective warmup

One of the biggest benefits of mobility training is that is that it can help to make your warmups more effective. Focusing on your mobility helps to increase the flow of blood around the body, ensuring the synovial fluid in our joints is moved around, improving their lubrication.

  • Reduce the risk of injury

Alongside boosting your strength and enhancing your warmup, mobility training can also help to minimize the risk of injury. If your joints are not able to move as designed, or their range is restricted, then you are placing yourself at a much higher risk of causing damage, particularly when lifting heavy weights.

  • Improve your technique

Mobility training is also a great way to boost your form when working out. When your muscles and joints are more flexible, you have an increased range of motion and will be able to perform an exercise with a greater technique. Many people mistakenly believe that static stretches will be enough for this, and while it can help, mobility training is far more beneficial.

How to improve mobility

Now there can be no denying the importance of mobility in enhancing your workout; how can you improve mobility? There are many ways to focus on mobility, but focusing on key areas such as your hips, shoulders, knees, and back will help to minimize the risk of injury and boost your overall strength.
